BMI View: Chile will remain a global outperformer in renewable energy use in the mining sector , due to the cost competitive nature of renewables and security of supply.
We expect to see continued bilateral supply agreements between mining companies and renewable energy companies in Chile, despite lower oil prices threatening the trend. Ongoing and planned projects confirm Chile's leading role in renewable energy integration in the mining sector:
Codelco's Gabriela Mistral copper mine in the Atacama Desert replaced 80% of its diesel use with a thermosolar plant run by Chile's Energia Llaima SpA and Denmark's Arcon-Sunmark in 2013.
